Al-Ma'arij · The Ascending Stairways
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallUpon the disbelievers, which none can repel,
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallFrom Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways
Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall(Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years.
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallBut be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see.
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallLo! they behold it afar off
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallWhile we behold it nigh:
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallThe day when the sky will become as molten copper,
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallAnd the hills become as flakes of wool,
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallAnd no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallThough they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallAnd his spouse and his brother
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallAnd his kin that harboured him
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallAnd all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him.
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallBut nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallEager to roast;
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallIt calleth him who turned and fled (from truth),
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallAnd hoarded (wealth) and withheld it.
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallLo! man was created anxious,
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallFretful when evil befalleth him
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallAnd, when good befalleth him, grudging;
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallSave worshippers.
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallWho are constant at their worship
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallAnd in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallFor the beggar and the destitute;
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallAnd those who believe in the Day of Judgment,
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallAnd those who are fearful of their Lord's doom -
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallLo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure-
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallAnd those who preserve their chastity
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallSave with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy;
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallBut whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors;
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallAnd those who keep their pledges and their covenant,
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallAnd those who stand by their testimony
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallAnd those who are attentive at their worship.
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallThese will dwell in Gardens, honoured.
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallWhat aileth those who disbelieve, that they keep staring toward thee (O Muhammad), open-eyed,
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallOn the right and on the left, in groups?
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallDoth every man among them hope to enter the Garden of Delight?
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallNay, verily. Lo! We created them from what they know.
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallBut nay! I swear by the Lord of the rising-places and the setting-places (of the planets) that We verily are Able
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallTo replace them by (others) better than them. And we are not to be outrun.
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallSo let them chat and play until they meet their Day which they are promised,
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallThe day when they come forth from the graves in haste, as racing to a goal,
Mohammed Marmaduke William PickthallWith eyes aghast, abasement stupefying them: Such is the Day which they are promised.
